Leeds Conservatoire in Partnership with Black Lives in Music
Leeds Conservatoire is a founding member of Black Lives in Music, becoming their first confirmed working partner when they were set up in 2020.
Black Lives in Music is made up of a network partner organisations all working towards the same goal: to dismantle structural racism in the music industry. They aim to support the sector to provide better professional opportunities, and aim to achieve equality for Black, Asian and Ethnically Diverse professionals at all levels and in all areas of the UK Jazz and Classical industry. Leeds Conservatoire was first introduced to BLiM through BA (Hons) Music (Jazz) programme leader Jamil Sheriff, who currently sits on the Black Lives in Music Task Force.
Key opportunities for students include:
- Understanding and overcoming barriers and restrictions to success
- Better understanding inclusive practice
- Undertaking performance and professional opportunities through organisational links and networks
‘It’s been great to work with Leeds Conservatoire as part of their Equality, Diversity and Inclusion change programme. The inclusive practice work of all conservatoires is crucial to better representation and culture change in the wider ecology of the sector. I’m heartened by the huge amount of work undertaken by Leeds Conservatoire to lead on change.’ -
