Life is the name of Leeds Conservatoire’s online noticeboard. Life is built on a Wordpress installation with theme alterations to match our brand and we have extended its functionality through custom code.
Content
Staff and students populate Life with content and information, which means that the accessibility of information on Life is inconsistent. We have undertaken a preliminary audit and found that some content may not meet the WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards, including:
- Some images do not have alt-text descriptions or decorative markings where appropriate
Due to the extensive range of content and contributors, we believe that it would be a disproportionate burden for us to modify all the content on Life to ensure that it meets WCAG 2.1 AA standards. However, our is aim is that all new and updated content will meet these standards.
We are actively working on the development of content creation on Life to make it easier for contributors to meet the WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards.
Changing text and interface size
You can change the visual appearance of Life. These options include:
- Light text on a dark background
- Using the OpenDyslexic Font
- Adding borders to individual sections of content
You can do this using the options within your profile.
It responds to browser size and zoom settings. You can use your browser’s controls to adjust text size and zoom up to 300% without altering the functionality of Space.
To change text size using your browser’s controls, you can use these key combinations:
For Windows:
Zoom In: Press CTRL "+"
Zoom Out: Press CTRL "-"
Return to original size: Press CTRL "0" (except for Internet Explorer)
For Macs:
Zoom In: Press COMMAND "+"
Zoom Out: Press COMMAND "-"
Return to original size: Press COMMAND "0"
To change text size using your browser’s menu:
Internet explorer
Using the menu bar, select:
- View
- Zoom
- Zoom In or Zoom Out.
You can also set a zoom percentage.
Google chrome
Using the menu bar, select:
- View
- Zoom In or Zoom Out.
To return the view to the original size, select Actual Size.
FireFox
Using the menu bar, select:
- View
- Zoom Text Only
- Zoom In or Zoom Out
This method will only change the text size. Other elements of the page will remain the same.
To change all page elements using the menu bar, select:
- View
- Zoom In or Zoom Out.
To return the view to the original size, select Reset.
Safari
Using the menu bar, select:
- View
- Zoom Text Only
- Zoom In or Zoom Out
This method will only change the text size. Other elements of the page will remain the same.
To change all page elements using the menu bar, select:

To return the view to the original size, select Actual Size
Navigating Life using a keyboard
We are aware that it may not possible to navigate Life on some browsers using a keyboard. We are investigating this issue and aim to fix this by September 2022.
