Orchestras Live

Leeds Conservatoire in Partnership with Orchestras Live

Orchestras Live create inspiring orchestral experiences for communities across England, with the underlying ethos and belief that orchestras are for everyone.

The partnership between Leeds Conservatoire and Orchestras Live sets out a shared commitment to promote and support professional orchestral skills development programmes for Leeds Conservatoire students. This fits with Orchestras Live’s mission to ensure everyone has access to and can enjoy the benefits of live orchestral music, regardless of their background.

Second- and third-year students from a range of pathways, including Film Music, Jazz, Popular and Classical, are involved in the partnership’s New Connections project, where new music is co-created and performed in concert with community partners including Burley and Woodhead Church of England Primary School; Made with Music’s Sunshine and Smiles music group for young people with Down Syndrome and their families; and Meeting Point, a community support group for refugees and asylum seekers.

Key opportunities for students include:

  • Group music and co-creation, plus observing and shadowing professional group leaders and co-creators at work
  • Engaging and working creatively with community groups and non-professional musicians

‘Professional orchestral playing is not a career I’ve seen as “for me” or considered, as normally I find it more stressful than enjoyable. Working with Orchestras Live has changed that for me as I can see myself playing in more orchestras that have a community focus.’ -
