The partnership between Leeds Conservatoire and Opera North began in 2019 in a bid to formalise how the region’s leading opera company could support the next generation of performers in training at Leeds Conservatoire, enhancing the conservatoire’s student experience and contributing to the city’s collaborative cultural activity.

Leeds Conservatoire is a founding member of Black Lives in Music. Black Lives in Music is made up of a number of partners who are all working towards the same goal: to dismantle structural racism in our industry. Together we aim to support the industry in providing better professional opportunities. We also want to achieve equality for Black, Asian and Ethnically Diverse professionals at all levels and in all areas of the UK Jazz and Classical industry.

In September 2011, Leeds Conservatoire became an All-Steinway School, internationally joining the likes of Yale University's School of Music and the Juilliard School, New York. As the first English conservatoire to hold the coveted All-Steinway School status – meaning 90% of its pianos are from the Steinway family – Leeds Conservatoire demonstrates a commitment to excellence by providing its students with the best equipment possible for the study of music.

Many families Made With Music work with in Leeds have asked for a place they can make music together and find their needs aren’t met in other music groups. In 2023, Leeds Conservatoire and Made With Music were delighted to launch OPEN, a new inclusive ensemble in Leeds for anyone who might need extra support to make music with family and friends.

Leeds Conservatoire welcomed the opportunity to work on a new musical theatre storytelling project in development by British Youth Music Theatre (BYMT). The protagonist of the show, titled The Steadfast Tin Soldier, is a d/Deaf performer and this will eventually be performed with a company of fully integrated disabled and non-disabled young people.

In August of 2022, Leeds Heritage Theatre welcomed students from Leeds Conservatoire's Summer School programme who were considering their options for higher education. The students, some from Leeds, others from as far afield as Washington DC and Thailand, explored Leeds Grand Theatre and the set of Jersey Boys, then took part in a Performance Skills and Creative Careers workshop.

Since its introduction to the UK by Jazz North in 2019, Jazz Camp for Girls has continued to grow, reaching more places across the North of England and helping to address the gender imbalance in jazz. This year, 22 female and nonbinary musicians, aged between 8 and 15, were welcomed to Leeds Conservatoire on 2 March to experience jazz music and improvisation in a supportive environment. Thanks to support from Arts Council England and Leeds Music Education Partnership, the conservatoire was able to offer free places to individuals studying or living in Leeds.

The choir annually sponsors the ‘Margaret Markland Choral Bursary’ made possible by the specific funding from the Liz and Terry Bramall Foundation. Each year the opportunity is offered to music students at Leeds Conservatoire to apply for one of the three bursary places on offer to sing with YPC.
