Course Studied:
BA (Hons) Music (Production)
Year of Graduation: 2023
Straight from DORK's 2023 'Hype List', Mollie Coddled (she/her) is an Alt-Pop making indie queen from Yorkshire. Mollie’s music shares views of Gen-Z society through a dreamy and fun, sonic lens.
BA (Hons) Music (Production)When did you first start pursuing your career and what inspired you to do so?
I started pursuing music as a career when I was in college (16-18), I was in love with music growing up and with it being the only thing I’m passionate about, it was the only thing I could see myself doing as a career! I wanted to be able to share my stories with people going through similar experiences and music was a way I could get that out there!
How did studying at Leeds Conservatoire prepare you for working in the wider industry?
From studying at Leeds Conservatoire I learned so much not only about the industry itself but also how to participate in it a as a musician! How to collect my royalties, how to save money by producing my own music and being an all around girl boss :) Learning that you don’t have to rely on someone else to start your career is so freeing!
How important were the connections you made during your studies?
Being at the Conservatoire made me a part of the Indie music scene in Leeds which is something I’m so grateful for; being able to grow a network of like-minded people who all take music as seriously as you is so great to be around because you really push yourself to keep growing!
Could you tell about your most memorable performance to date?
Playing at the O2 Academy in London supporting Ellie Dixon was Insane! Having so many people singing the words back to me was a surreal moment!
What's coming up next for you in terms of projects or releases?
I just released a new song called ‘Manic Pixie Dream Girl’ which is about taking back your power from people who don’t treat you as well as they should :) The music video is inspired by Scott Pilgrim vs The World (which was super fun to make!)
Watch the 'Manic Pixie Dream Girl' Music VideoWhat is your favourite song that you’ve written?
Probably 'Manic Pixie Dream Girl’! It’s the first time I’ve explicitly spoken about my AuDHD in my music (which took a lot of deliberation) but the response on social media has been so beautiful from the Neurodivergent community which made it so worth it! -<3
Stream 'Manic Pixie Dream Girl'How would you describe your sound?
The music I make is Indie Pop/Dreampop! Musically, a mix of analogue synths and guitars topped with loads of vocal stacks and ear candy with the lyrical focus on the inner dialogue and feeling different/misunderstood!
What are your key sources of inspiration when writing?
I only write songs from personal experience! I want my songs to provide a safe space where my listeners can relax, feel seen and confide in. I’m Autistic / ADHD, so being honest and authentic within my songwriting is really important to me, as there isn’t a lot of open AuDHD representation in music.
What was the most important lesson you learned during your time in Leeds?
Be kind and meet as many people as possible! Sounds cringy but knowing people and being friends with other musicians brings you opportunities - the other hand being if you don’t make an effort to network, you won’t get anywhere really because you won’t have any connections to do so.
What is your best memory from Leeds Conservatoire?
I loved all of the events that the SU used to put on in my Foundation year! The weekly pub quizzes hosted by the resident Drag Queen and super cheap pints and burgers was always my highlight of the week! “Hump Day” they called it :) One time the SU President (Holly, at the time) took us all to the trampoline park - that’s probably my fave memory!
What advice would you give to a prospective student thinking of applying to your course?
Be prepared to put in immense hours and lots of passion, if you want to do well and come out of the course having learned loads and gained loads of new experiences, you need to put ALL of your effort in and really put yourself out there, grab every opportunity they throw at you!
