Year of Graduation: 2020
Tom (he/him), Music Business alumni, shares how his studies have taken him to land the role as Events/Live Assistant at the London record label, Defected Records.
BA (Hons) Music (Business)How did studying at Leeds Conservatoire prepare you for working in the industry?
Studying at Leeds Conservatoire prepared me with all the skills and insight necessary for me to start working in the industry. Completing real world modules such as putting on a show, creating & pitching business plans & the volunteering opportunities gave me invaluable insight into how the industry works.
How important were the connections you made during your studies?
The connections were super important – you never know when they may come in useful. It’s always key to keep in contact on a regular basis with your connections as most people in the industry are always working on new projects and creations – you never know where this may lead.
Could you tell about some of your most memorable projects to date?
Some of my most memorable projects include working the closing weekend of Printworks London, managing our Defected show in Dubai & working my first single release from my artist; Kitty Amor.
What's coming up next for you in terms of projects/your work within the industry?
Ibiza 2024 is going to be the highlight this year with our freshly announced Defected Residency at Ushuaïa. I’m also working on a number of releases with my management roster with tracks coming on Tomorrowland, Threesixzero, Ultra Records, Mahaba Music & Defected.
How has studying your course impacted what you do for your career currently?
Studying Music Business impacted what I do for my career massively; if it wasn’t for the Conservatoire, I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing now.
What is your best memory from Leeds Conservatoire?
My best memory from Leeds Conservatoire would have to be putting on our event at Oporto for one of our 3rd year project. I learnt so much through putting this and had a proper laugh whilst doing it!
What was the most important lesson you learned studying at the Conservatoire?
The most important lesson I learnt was to never be afraid to put yourself out there. You can do this either by trying something new, reaching out to people for opportunities and getting stuck into as many projects as possible.
We'd like to say a huge thank you to Tom for chatting with us!
