Two Classical singers studying at Leeds Conservatoire scooped top prizes at this year’s Huddersfield Mrs Sunderland Festival.
Third year Classical student Elodie Smith placed first in the Soprano Solo class, singing 'Between Your Sheets' from Dove’s Five Am'rous Sighs. Elodie shared the following after returning to the competition this year:
“This is my second time performing at the Mrs Sunderland Festival, and I enjoyed myself just as much as last time! The chance to sing my pieces in front of such a supportive audience was so valuable, and the feedback I received from adjudicator Gaynor Keeble was really encouraging.”
Lydia Lythgoe, also a third year Classical student, won the Vocal Recital class, performing ‘E’Gelosia Quella Tiranna’ from Handel’s opera Serse, ‘Die Stille’ by Schumann and ‘Night’ from George Crumbs’ Three Early Songs. Lydia shared how the competition experience was really beneficial:
“It was amazing to take part in the Mrs Sunderland competition this year. I really enjoyed having the opportunity to run some of the repertoire that I am performing in my final recital in a few months. I also got some very helpful feedback from adjudicator Gaynor Keeble and made some new friends at the competition that I may not have otherwise met. Overall it was a great day.”
The first festival was held in April 1889 with just 37 competitors; Mrs Sunderland herself presented the prizes. Since its modest beginnings the festival has expanded vastly. The 2024 festival had over 5000 performances, over 120 classes, five workshops, five concerts and a showcase. You can find out more about the festival’s history here.
