Leeds College of Music has been nominated for a prestigious Guardian Education Award in the Employability and Entrepreneurship category.

The award seeks to recognise a successful initiative that equips students with the skills they need for the job market, provides networking opportunities, gives them access to potential employers, and fosters the spirit of creativity that would enable them to launch their own enterprises.

LCoM has been shortlisted for The Musicians’ Development and Booking Agency - a specially tailored provision delivered by the Enterprise Team. The initiative consists of different strands, including support for musicians to gain paid work and experience performing in a range of settings; and a development programme which allows students to apply for funding and mentoring to help with anything from PR and publishing, to start-up funding for a new business.

In addition to this, LCoM offers further schemes to help students get their careers off the ground. These include the Experience Fund, which helps students gain experience in settings that may be otherwise unaffordable – such as a summer school abroad; the Match Funding Scheme provides financial support for student projects; and our Photo and Video Funding allows students to get high quality promotional materials at a reduced cost.

James Warrender, Enterprise Co-Ordinator at Leeds College of Music, said; “In order to serve a large community of creative students we needed a suitably adaptable suite of products to suit their range of interests and approaches.

In response, we created The Musicians’ Development and Booking Agency; offering tailored services to students beyond the curriculum, supporting the development of ideas and encouraging innovative approaches to the foundations of their careers. The aim is for students to take ownership of their employability and to encourage them to consider the ‘product’ in their work.

As an organisation we are so committed to helping students develop their employability and entrepreneurship – so we’re thrilled to be nominated for this award!”
