Professor Joe Wilson has been appointed as Principal of Leeds Conservatoire – the fifth Principal since the institution opened its doors in 1965. Joe was appointed as Interim Principal in September 2020, and following a successful tenure in this position, he now takes the lead of the conservatoire permanently.
Joe’s career includes extensive experience of the music and creative industries; not least as a founding member of the band Sneaker Pimps, but as a producer, artist and educator too.
He has spent more than ten years specialising in music education, joining Leeds Conservatoire in 2013 and becoming Vice Principal in 2018.
During this period, the conservatoire has grown considerably, adding new specialist training in music and expanding its provision to performing arts. Leeds Conservatoire changed its name from Leeds College of Music in August 2020, as a mark of a new era for the institution.
On being appointed as Principal of Leeds Conservatoire, Joe Wilson said;
“It is a huge honour for me to be appointed as Principal of Leeds Conservatoire. With our friends and partners in the city and across the Luminate Education Group, Leeds Conservatoire is well- placed to collectively drive the conservatoire to greater levels of excellence with inclusive and diverse music and performance.
I want to thank all students and staff for their professionalism, dedication and creativity over the lockdown period. If we can achieve as much as we have over the last fifteen months, just think of what we can achieve with the cultural leaders and educators in the region by playing our part in the heart of the cultural quarter of Leeds.”
