A performer who trained at Leeds Conservatoire is making her professional debut in Shrek the Musical at London’s Eventim Apollo, which runs until 31 August 2024.
Davina Manuel-Mokwenye secured her first job just prior to graduating from the conservatoire. The 21-year-old, who studied Musical Theatre, credits her training for helping her to perform to the best of her ability, ace the audition and now help bring the story of Shrek to life.
The musical’s cast also includes a host of well-known names such as Todrick Hall (Donkey), Antony Lawrence (Shrek), Joanne Clifton (Princess Fiona), James Gillan (Lord Farquaad), and Cherece Richards (Dragon).
We caught up with Davina to discuss how training at the conservatoire prepared her for a professional setting, her debut in Shrek the Musical, plus career aspirations.
What was your experience like studying Musical Theatre at Leeds Conservatoire?
My experience studying at Leeds Conservatoire was definitely not easy, new city, new people, new course, but ultimately the best decision I have made so far in my adult life. The environment created at the conservatoire was so supportive and caring, making all the hardships that I faced less daunting as I never faced it alone. I have never had lecturers care so much for my wellbeing and my future like the staff at Leeds Conservatoire so for that I am forever grateful.
What aspects of your training do you feel best prepared you for Shrek the Musical?
Our audition tech classes really did simulate what it’s like in the professional industry so when it came to actually auditioning I was so prepared and confident because it just felt like another class to me which I believe really helped me perform to the best of my ability.
How was the audition process for Shrek the Musical and how did you feel when you got the job?
The audition process for Shrek was very relaxed and supportive, it almost felt as if they were rooting for me instead of judging me. Honestly when I got the call to let me know that I got the job it almost didn’t feel real, I felt like I was being pranked almost; even though I had a feeling that I got the job it was still a shock to actually get the offer. Then when I found out that I would be Mama Bear and first cover Dragon initially I was ecstatic, then imposter syndrome set in heavily as it was a big first job to have as a soon-to-be graduate but ultimately I had to trust my training and myself that I was up for the job and that I belonged in that company and so far it has not been the easiest ride but I am so glad to be part of such an amazing show.
What are your plans for the future?
In such an unpredictable career we can only plan so much; only time will tell.
