A Leeds Conservatoire graduate has secured support from the PPL Momentum Music Fund to complete and release a new EP ‘Night Shift.’
Lizzie Berchie burst onto the scene with her first EP ‘Under The Sun’ co-produced by Danny Hilton. This was followed by her sophomore EP ‘Am I An Adult Yet?’ which was crowned Project of the Year at the State of R&B Awards.
Having supported artists like Loyle Carner, Pip Millett and Noname, Lizzie has grown from “an extremely shy child” into a seasoned performer who is ready to take the UK Soul and R&B scene by the reins.
The 25-year-old started singing with her sister in their shared childhood bedroom to R&B artists including Usher and Destiny’s Child. Lizzie’s teacher encouraged her to study Musical Theatre at school, then Songwriting at Leeds Conservatoire which gave her a much needed boost.
“Some people are born with loads of confidence, but others genuinely have to work for it. I think I had to do that. Forcing myself to be in uncomfortable situations, taking the big roles in school, and being in front of a crowd. I had to unlearn being nervous,” said Lizzie.
In Leeds, doors were opened for her to compose, produce and sing with live bands and it was here that she met Danny Hilton, now a frequent collaborator.
The PPL Momentum Music Fund supports artists who have reached a crucial tipping point, have a team already in place and are ready to take the next step in their careers.
“It’s definitely not easy being an independent artist - financially and emotionally - and myself and my Tru Community [London-based label] family have been hustling to get this far so it truly means so much to me to have this kind of support towards my next project,” Lizzie added.
Managed by PRS Foundation, the PPL Momentum Music Fund awards grants of £5,000 to £15,000 using funds from PRS Foundation, PPL, Creative Wales and Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
