Music industry jobs rose a record 3% last year, meaning the industry now sustains careers for 145, 815 people. This is according to UK Music’s recent ‘Measuring Music’ report – which provides an insight to the music industry’s contribution to the UK economy.
Whilst the music industry has continued to grow across almost every sector, big rises in recorded music and publishing revenues have helped fuel growth over the last year - with UK music exports up by 7% to a record 2.6bn.
UK Music CEO Michael Dugher, who received a Fellowship from the conservatoire this year, said;
“British music brings enjoyment to millions and makes a massive contribution to the UK plc. I am really proud of the fact that these figures show once again that when it comes to music, we in the UK are very, very good at what we do. These figures show what can be achieved when we choose to back the British music industry.”
With the music industry thriving, a degree in Music can offer a variety of career options. Our own recent survey of LCoM graduates showed that 97% of our alumni were in full time work or study following graduation, with around 80% working in the creative industries (DHLE 2017).
Our graduates go on to find success across the whole industry, such as guitarist and songwriter Luke Fitton who tours with Kylie Minogue and has written for Girls Aloud and Little Mix, or Music Production graduate Aamir Yaqub - a Grammy award-winning engineer who has worked with Rhianna.
Others find success in a whole host of fields such journalism – like Music Production alumna Ellie Palmer who is Online Editor at Pianist Magazine, or events management, like Jazz graduate Matt Robinson who runs Lancaster Jazz Festival, or publishing, like Music Business graduate Tom Bladon who recently landed a job with Sony.
We’re delighted to see so many of our students succeed and we put this down to the incredible hard work and dedication of our students combined with the industry-relevant focus of our education, combined with the professional practice, performance opportunities and creative networks that they access whilst studying at LCoM.
In addition to our industry-relevant training, we invest significantly in early career development opportunities. LCoM’s enterprise department offer a number of schemes to help students get their careers off the ground before they even graduate.
The Artists and Business Development Fund allows students to apply for funding and mentoring to help with anything from PR and publishing, to start-up funding for a new initiative. Our Experience Fund helps students gain experience in settings that may be otherwise unaffordable – such as a summer school abroad; our Match Funding Scheme provides financial support for student projects and our Photo and Video Funding allows students to get high quality promotional materials at a reduced cost.
