MA Music Production

You’ll be able to specialise in DAW-based and studio-based practice, as well as immersive audio. Developing your skills and experience, we’ll help you become a critical practitioner, giving you a deeper understanding of your work through specialist tutor, peer and visiting industry guest support.

(Note: This course takes place in-person at our Leeds campus, however there is also an option to study an online variant of the course, focusing on DAW-based production.)

The Popular Music pathway is designed to help you focus on being a performer and cultivate a distinctive and robust artistic voice. You'll receive tailored training in performance practice, allowing you to refine your stage presence, vocal techniques, and overall musicianship. You’ll be encouraged to explore and expand your unique style through a combination of individual coaching, ensemble work, and live performance opportunities.

The ‘Songwriter’ pathway is designed to immerse you in the craft of songwriting, helping you develop both technical proficiency and creative fluidity. You'll study songwriting techniques, exploring various styles, structures, and lyrical themes and be given tailored feedback and mentorship from experienced songwriters and industry professionals.

By combining both performance and songwriting in this specialism, you develop both performance and composition skills equally. You’ll receive comprehensive training in both disciplines, allowing you to refine your stage presence while developing your songwriting skills.

If you’re a writer whose stage is in the studio rather than at a gig, the ‘Writer Producer’ pathway in our postgraduate popular music program is ideal for artists who write their own material and want to master both songwriting and production within a DAW environment.

Our network of connections with local, regional and national arts organisations includes Come Play With Me, EMI North, Opera North and more. Careers

With a deep understanding of the creative and industrial contexts within which your practice exists, as an alumnus you will be prepared for a career as a musician.

Our postgraduate students have received commissions, performed at regional and international festivals including South by South West, The Reeperbahn Festival, Glastonbury and Live at Leeds, progressed to teaching positions, and created public installations.

Funding Your Postgraduate Studies

There are a range of options to help you fund your postgraduate course, including postgraduate student loans. There are also several scholarships available to apply for, including the following:

Leeds Conservatoire Progression Scholarship - 15 scholarships are available to alumni who have an offer of a place on a MA course at Leeds Conservatoire and belong to one or more of our underrepresented groups, will be automatically awarded a 10% discount on tuition fees.
