Purpose
This page outlines the procedures for suspending a student from Saturday School due to serious behavioural concerns, ensuring a structured process for re-entry and a focus on student success and safety.
Grounds for suspension
A student may be suspended if they engage in behaviour that:
· Poses a risk to themselves, other students, or staff.
· Repeatedly disrupts the learning environment.
· Involves violence, bullying, harassment, or discrimination.
· Involves damage to property or theft.
· Violates LJC’s behaviour code despite previous interventions.
Suspension Procedures
· The decision to suspend a student will be made by the Head of Leeds Junior Conservatoire or a designated staff member.
· Parents/guardians will be notified immediately by phone and in writing.
· The suspension period will be determined based on the severity of the incident (typically 1–3 sessions).
· The student will be required to leave the premises safely, either with a parent/guardian or as arranged with staff.
Pre-Return Meeting
Before returning to Saturday School, the student and their parent/guardian must attend a Meeting with the Head of Saturday School. This meeting will:
· Review the reasons for the suspension.
· Discuss the student’s understanding of their actions.
· Outline expectations for behaviour moving forward.
· Agree on a Safety & Support Plan to prevent further incidents.
Safety and Support Plan
A Safety & Support Plan will be created for any student returning from suspension. This plan may include:
· Clear behaviour expectations and consequences for future incidents.
· Additional supervision or staff support if required.
· A check-in system with a designated staff member.
· Possible referrals to external support services (if applicable).
Appeals Process
If a parent/guardian wishes to appeal a suspension, they may submit a written request for review to the Head of Saturday School. A meeting will be arranged to discuss concerns.
Monitoring and Review
All suspensions will be recorded, and repeated incidents will be reviewed by the school leadership team to determine further actions, which may include extended suspension or removal from the program if necessary.
