Staying Safe for Students
If you have any concerns about Saturdays or don't feel safe please talk to Karina or Dan, or any member of staff. It is important to us that LJC is a safe space for all students.
Absences
If you are unable to attend, please let us know by emailing [email protected] by 8.45AM on the day the lesson is scheduled to take place. We will contact families if LJC has not been notified of an absence.
Occasionally, you may need to leave early (e.g. you are involved in a performance at your school). A written request via email by parents/carers needs to be made in advance for permission to be given.
Absences leading up to performance dates need to be requested two months in advance. This is for absences on the four session dates before the performance date.
When you arrive
Show your lanyard and ID/LJC card to the security person sitting behind reception.
Breaktimes
Where should I go?
All students go to the Cafe Bar during their break times. You will be able to chat with other students, eat your snacks and take a well-earned break in between learning sessions. If you would like a quiet space, please speak to Karina, Dan or Evie who can show you where to go.
Can I buy food from the Cafe Bar?
Drinks, snacks and a limited selection of sandwiches are available to purchase from the Cafe Bar, but we recommend you bring your own food and drink with you to avoid queueing for the full break time.
Your ID Cards
ID Cards are used to identify you as a Leeds Junior Conservatoire student when you arrive at Leeds Conservatoire. They are also used to unlock doors leading to corridors within the building; your tutor will show you this on your building tour.
What if I forget my ID card one morning?
We're only human and do forget things from time to time. When you arrive, please go to reception so they can issue you with a temporary pass for the day.
First Aid
If you require first aid at any time, if you can, please go to the nearest tutor or member of Leeds Conservatoire staff who will find you a first aider; if you can't, shout for help until someone comes to you.
Magnetic Door Locks
The doors leading to corridors and areas within the conservatoire have magnetic locks. These can be unlocked with your ID card.
Hearing
Our hearing as musicians and performers is vital, so we must protect it the best we can. The best ways are
- Turn down the volume in rehearsals
- Wear ear protection
- Don't listen to loud music with headphones in
Fire Evacuation
In case of a fire evacuation, the fire alarm will sound and you need to evacuate the building from the nearest fire exit.
If the fire alarm sounds when you are in a lesson
- Exit the room and follow your tutor to the nearest fire exit, who will lead you to the meeting point.
- Leave your bags and instruments in the room.
If the fire alarm sounds during break time or lesson change over
- During breaktime, follow Leeds Conservatoire staff to the nearest fire exit and out of the building, meeting your current tutor outside at the meeting point.
- If you are changing over lessons, follow Leeds Conservatoire staff to the nearest first exit and meet the tutor of the lesson you have just had at the meeting point.
Once at the meeting point
- Your tutor will ask you to stand in a line and register you outside at the meeting point in front of St Peter's Building and Northern Ballet. Please be extra vigilant as you cross the road to get to the meeting point.
- Students must stay with their tutor and in their line and not wander around. Please stay quiet so we can register students and make any announcements.
Only re-enter the building once a fire marshal has said it is okay to do so.
