Course Overview

This degree focuses on vocal performance, industry skills and pedagogy, providing a comprehensive foundation in terminology and methodologies. It integrates various artistic and pedagogical disciplines alongside humanities and physical sciences. You’ll develop an insight into a range of diverse music and teaching environments, fostering cognitive, intellectual, practical, and contextual abilities.

As the first of its kind in the UK, this degree aligns with Leeds Conservatoire’s long-standing commitment to innovation and evolving the educational landscape. You’ll be encouraged to blend creativity with theoretical and technical skills. An industry focus will guide you toward converting your studies into professional opportunities as voice and singing practitioners within the music industry, education and beyond.

Your Teaching

You’ll receive one-to-one tuition and training from voice experts and develop performance, musicianship and technical skills through experiential learning with seminars, workshops and ensemble collaborations. You’ll also explore the theory and application of music and voice education, and elements of music therapy.

Professional Development

As well as the specific skills and experience you’ll gain in music and speech therapy, vocal tuition, and vocal health, voice acting and recording, you’ll graduate with a diverse set of transferable skills that extend beyond the realm of music. These will include business and marketing skills, project management, creativity and critical thinking, setting you on diverse and rewarding career paths.

Collaboration

As part of a campus community of more than 1,400singers, musicians and performers as well as other students on this course, you’ll have the opportunity to work and learn alongside your peers. You’ll also get the chance to take part in many other creative activities to develop skills as solo performers, in vocal groups, ensembles or the Pop Choir.

Performance Opportunities

There will be regular performance opportunities embedded in the delivery of the curriculum, as part of your assessments as well as opportunities to perform publicly.

Academic Requirements

BA (Hons) - 3 Years

96 UCAS tariff points from level 3 studies or equivalent, which normally include A Level Music or a BTEC Extended Diploma in a Music-related subject.

A minimum of three GCSEs including English Language at Grade C / Grade 4 or above or equivalent international qualification, eg IELTS 6.0 (5.5 in each component).

Leeds Conservatoire does not charge audition fees for any Undergraduate or Postgraduate course.

In many cases, if you prefer to submit your audition online rather than attend in person, this is an option. However, we don't want travel costs to be a barrier to attending in-person auditions at Leeds Conservatoire, so help is available for many applicants where finances are an issue. By employing a variety of assessment methods, the BA Voice (Performance & Pedagogy) aims to comprehensively evaluate students’ progress, knowledge, skills and reflections, while providing them with valuable feedback and support to further their development. Assessment methods include:

Performance Opportunities

Students on our Popular pathway play at our regular showcase, ‘Crosswire’, and perform at venues throughout the city, including the Brudenell Socal Club, Belgrave Music hall, Oporto and Nation of Shopkeepers. In addition, many of our students join the Contemporary Pop Choir and other extra-curricular ensembles that the college run.

Recently, students have performed at:

  • Sound City Festival (Liverpool)
  • Eurosonic Festival (Netherlands)
  • The Royal Festival Hall (London)
  • Crosswire (a regular night for Leeds College
    of Music Pop and Production students)
  • BBC One’s Pitch Battle (Winners) – made up of singers from our Contemporary Pop Choir
