To kick off this week’s roster of sessions we’ll be introducing ourselves and some of our students to let you know what we’re all about, what kind of things to expect on the Pop course at Leeds Conservatoire, and what it’s like to be a student here.

11.30am-12.30pm - The Artist/Producer Relationship: Q&A with Ed Thomas
– Hosted by Dr Jack Harbord (Programme Leader)
The relationship between music artists and producers is such an important one. Learning how to collaborate with a producer, to respond to critiques of your performances, and to build lasting relationships with a network of other creatives is essential to building a career in the music industry. In this session Music Producer Ed Thomas will be discussing his role and experiences working with artists and performers. We’ll be tackling questions like: what does a producer look for in a session musician? What makes a great writing session with an artist? What challenges and opportunities do musicians face in our current industry climate?
Ed Thomas’s experience working with artists such as Stormzy, Tom Misch, Jorja Smith, Chase and Status, Submotion Orchestra, and Maverick Sabre, amongst many others, has given him a unique insight into the essential creative and personal relationships that underpin the production of great music. Check out his work on Spotify.
We’ll be ready to take your questions, so come along and get involved.
1.30pm-2.30pm - The Job of the Touring Session Musician: Q&A with Charlie Barnes (Bastille)
One of the common questions we get asked is: ‘how do I become a session musician?’. Whether you want to tour the world or hunker down in the studio supporting the biggest names in music, there are some important things you should know. That’s why we’re thrilled to welcome Charlie Barnes, touring and recording musician with arena titans Bastille, to discuss his job and experience touring the world.
His work with Bastille involves playing on many of the world’s most renowned festival stages including Glastonbury, Coachella, Rock Am Ring, and Reading and Leeds. Charlie has made appearances on a host of US TV shows including those of Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel and James Corden and radio appearances also include Radio 1’s Live Lounge, Jo Whiley’s Radio 2 show, and O’Leary’s Radio 2 studio.
