LC Wind Orchestra
The Leeds Conservatoire Wind Orchestra are returning to the Venue in March, delivering a diverse and exciting programme of music.
Programme to include:
Hammersmith – Holst (13’)
A Mother of a Revolution - Omar Thomas (4')
Bright Spirit - Judith Bingham (7')
The Year of the Dragon - Philip Sparke (17')
Our conductor for the concert is Shaun Matthew.
Shaun passionately and energetically strives for all members of the public to discover something emotive and impactful within all forms of classical music.
As a conductor, tubist and animateur, he won the Royal Northern College of Music's Mortimer Fruber Prize for the Conducting of Contemporary Music and has conducted some of the UK’s finest orchestras; for instance, the Chineke! Orchestra as part of Grace Jones' Meltdown Festival concert and the Cambridge Music Festival, the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic.
As the long-term Musical Director of the Scarborough Symphony Orchestra, he regularly champions work by neglected composers such as William Grant Still, Shirley J. Thompson and Andrzej Panufnik, whilst successfully collaborating with prominent concerto musicians such as Tai Murray, Jamie Walton Ian Bousfield, and Jess Gillam.
Drawing from his Caribbean roots growing up in east London, Shaun is a passionate and vocal champion of arts education and advocacy, from which he consistently curates classical music outreach concerts for school-aged children across the UK: Shaun worked with Chineke! Junior Orchestra for the recent debut at Fairfield Halls and the Trinity Laban Conservatoire's Symphony Orchestra for their performance of Holst's The Planets.
Shaun and the Scarborough Symphony Orchestra have recently performed the final three symphonies of William Grant Still, completing the first performances of all Grant Still's symphonies in the UK. He currently holds the position of Professor of Tuba at the University of York.
