"Learning about others' creative processes has opened up so many doors for me. I've got so many more tools in my toolbox now that I've seen how others make their best work. Learning from and working with a large group of artists has been transformative for the way I view the creative sector."

Hi, Maura - We’d love to know where your musical/performing arts journey began?

I took some piano lessons as a child and started taking acting and singing classes when I was about 10 years old. Apparently I've always had a flair for the dramatic: my parents often tell me that I made them watch endless self-written shows in our basement.

What motivated you to pursue your chosen course, especially at Leeds Conservatoire?

I didn't realise Actor Musicianship existed before I moved to the UK. The opportunity to combine acting with music, and the possibilities that brought were very exciting to me. I chose Leeds Conservatoire because I immediately felt at home during my audition. I knew that this would be a place where I would not have to be afraid of failing or looking silly: it was made clear from day one that you cannot learn without making mistakes.

How has our course helped you? What are some of the main things you've learned so far?

I've become so much more confident in who I am as a person and as a performer. I've realised that you never stop learning as a performer. I know that there's a whole world of performance, music and creativity I want to explore when I graduate.

How has working with diverse artists in a collaborative environment benefited you?

Learning about others' creative processes has opened up so many doors for me. I've got so many more tools in my toolbox now that I've seen how others make their best work. Learning from and working with a large group of artists has been transformative for the way I view the creative sector.

Are there lots of performance opportunities for Leeds Conservatoire students?

Yes! There's lots of sharings throughout the year, and many of us have gotten the chance to perform with outside companies as well.

What drew you to study in the UK? Were there any specific reasons?

I've always loved the English language, especially Shakespeare's work. It's been a dream of mine for a long time to perform Shakespeare in its original language.

What's your take on Leeds? Is it easy to get accustomed to?

Having grown up around lots of nature, Leeds still feels like a very big city. Since moving here, I've figured out where to go when I need some green space. However, I felt at home very quickly after moving here. I have an amazing community around me, and the city itself is a very welcoming place for students and internationals.

What do you think are some of the perks of studying your course in the UK?

The massive performing arts industry. I feel like the theatre is much more embedded in English culture than it is back home. Studying in an English speaking country also allows for a broader grasp of the industry in different countries.

What do you think sets Leeds Conservatoire apart as a choice for international students looking to study in the UK?

Its connection to both London AND the North. I feel like it's easy to get stuck thinking about one or the other, but being in Leeds gives you access to the industry in multiple parts of the UK.

Finally, could you kindly share with us your experience at Leeds Conservatoire so far using just three words?

Eye-opening, Gratifying, and Beautiful.
