Molly Deakin - BA (Hons) Music (Business)
Molly Deakin is an entrepreneurial student on our Music Business course currently in her second year. During her studies so far she has written for 'Girls that Gig' and been involved in the indie music project, 'Why Isaac.' She reflects on how her business skills have developed since starting at Leeds Conservatoire and her experiences of moving to Leeds and settling into the conservatoire over the last two years.
Has your approach to the music business changed at all since your first year?
My business techniques have changed massively over the last two years: I now have the confidence to put myself out there and work with new people. Most importantly I have a much better understanding of where and who I should invest my time with in order to gain a better understanding of the industry.
What has been the most interesting project you have worked on so far?
The Why Isaac project: Why Isaac is an indie music project led by Leeds Conservatoire student Daniel Dixon. Within a small team, we worked on a visual and branding concept to launch the act onto social media and into the Leeds music scene. This project included logistical planning and creative directing and was really fun to put together. There’s so much more that can be done with this project which I would like to see executed in the future!
What do you get up to outside of Leeds Conservatoire?
I like to hang out with friends and find new places to hang out and listen to music!
Have you been involved in the SU / societies or other Leeds Conservatoire activities?
I have written some blog posts for ‘Girls that Gig’ which is a great start up by a student who has just graduated, Vicky Hollingworth. It’s a great organisation for women in the industry!
What is the best thing about living and studying in Leeds?
Leeds is a great place to live. When I first moved, I didn’t like it too much, but now I know it is vibrant and there is so many cool things to do! It’s about making yourself a second home and finding the things you love which I definitely did in my second year.
What advice would you give to a prospective student thinking of applying to your course?
If you are interested in the music business then go for it! Although it seems like a really specific thing to study, I have learnt so much that I can transfer to other subjects. The course is a great balance between being academic and practical and you can tailor it specially to what you want from it!

Exciting, challenging and fun!
